The Alpha D.O.T. glass windshield has vents, as seen in 3rd photo, but it’s not enough airflow for me. I bought two reproduction “Windshield Adjusting Arm Assembly for 46-49 Jeep CJ-2A” from quadratec.com. While the website shows a left & right part number, the only difference is the mounting bracket, which I did not need. The arm is used for both sides.
I bought two M10-1.5 x 50mm socket head cap screws and four M10-1.5 nylon lock nuts, placed them in the roll bar mount top bolt hole. Two of the nuts had to be ground down to fit in the roll cage recess. The outer lock nuts that hold the adjusting arm on were installed nylon side first, as the nut is flush when tightened. A longer bolt would not allow arms to completely fold.
The Alpha lower mounting brackets would not work, so I bought two short 90 degree brackets at Menards (Lowes / Home Depot). The bottom of the brackets had to be slightly ground down to clear the plastic when closed, circled in 2nd row 4th photo. The adjusting arm mount points are barely snugged up to allow pivot. The 90 degree bracket at windshield bolts are fully tightened, had to be installed inside to out as they would hit on roll cage. 3/8″ bolts, washers & nylon lock nuts used.
I did the passenger side first, had an oops when I drilled new hole in frame, 2nd row 5th photo. Hopefully the grommet will stay in place, 2nd row 6th photo. Grommets also put in original mounting holes. The adjusting arms and 90 degree brackets had to be tweaked a little to make them work. Test fit, remove, vise & hammer or twist. Test fit, remove vise & hammer or twist. 😀
The top windshield roll bar mounts, I removed the bolts & added a liberal amount of loctite. The bolts need to be barely snug to allow windshield to pivot.
When windshield is closed & arms tightened, it feels solid. As of this post I do not believe I will need any additional securing latches. There was a gap between windshield & body when first installed, I added foam weather strip. The adjusting arms leave a slightly larger gap, so I bought thicker weatherstrip.
The windshield will tilt out just a little farther than seen in photos, but after test driving what is seen is plenty for me. The windshield wiper arms limit how far windshield can tilt out, hits on roof. It creates larger blind spots when opened.
It is really neat a person can kit build a brand new WWII MB Jeep, or early post war Jeep, only lacking new transmission, transfer case & axles. Reproduction engine blocks, cylinder heads & all components are being made now. Full rebuild components are available for used drive train stuff. The most comprehensive kits appear to be made in the Philippines https://mdjuan.com.ph/ with resellers here in usa.
